Inga Gubeka is a 20-something entrepreneur who is making his mark on the South African design and décor scene. Born in the Eastern Cape and raise in Durban and graduated from Cape Peninsula University of Technology,Gubeka established Indalo Décor in Cape Town in December 2013.
Although he studied interior design, he soon realised that he enjoys the physical process of making objects and now runs a studio in Paarden Eiland, Cape Town. Here he designs and makes unique products including backpacks, clocks and lamps. Gubeka also creates wooden accessories for mobile phones and tablets with The backpack is finished using leather straps and lined with shwe shwe, a fabric synonymous with Xhosa culture in South Africa. The Umtwalo Wooden Backpack was showcased as part of Design Indaba Expo‟s Africa is Now exhibition under the theme “Africa is Transformed”, which looked at how Africans have a make-do approach to materiality, transforming what‟s at hand unto unexpected objects and designs that delight.
